Planting sugarcane in standing wheat crop

PAU has recommended growing of sugarcane in the standing wheat, raised with Furrow Irrigated Raised Bed (FIRB) system by putting the sugarcane setts in furrows after} reshaping. The method gives maximum , economic returns from wheat+sugarcane. Sugarcane productivity in Punjab (61.7 t/ha) is lower than the national average (70.0 t/ha) primarily because of late sowing after harvesting of wheat. Due to assured marketing and better price, wheat is an important rabi crop of north India. The farmers do not want to sacrifice the wheat crop, therefore, majority of the farmers sow sugarcane after wheat harvest in April/May while optimum time of sugarcane planting in Punjab is February-March.
