IN the state of Punjab there are about six lacs of electrically run tube wells. The tube wells run on a induction motor using three phase supply. The induction motor is designed to operate on all the three phases and its efficiency is maximum when thesupply is balanced in three lines. Punjab State Electricity Board, to stall the indiscriminate use of electric motors and to conserve power resorts to : Shut off all the power lines (three phases). Or To make power available to some of the domestic consumers, the power is stopped in one or two of the three phases.
