Sunflower accounts for nearly 14 per cent of the world production of edible oils and 7 per cent of the oil cakes and defatted meal. High yield potential, high content of good quality oil having anti-cholesterol properties and vitamins (A, B, D and E)renders it one of the most suitable premium oil for cooking purpose. Green revolution has made India self-sufficient in food grains production, but the same is not true in case of edible oils. About 5 million tones of edible oil is imported every year tofulfill the demand which costs nearly Rs 12000 crores. Furthermore the demand of oilseeds is still increasing at the rate of 4-6 per cent per annum. The productivity of oilseeds is low as these crops are grown under energy starved conditions with much due consideration to appropriate production and protection technoloqies.
