Few hardy weeds in maize are not controlled by herbicide Atrazine. The infestation of these weeds is increasing day by day in maize and is becoming a limiting factor in maize cultivation. Maize, despite being high genetic potential and photosynthesisexplorative crop, its average productivity is very low. This crop was grown on an area of 153 thousand hectares, with a total production of 521 thousand tonnes and an average yield of 3408 kg/ha during 2007-08 in the Punjab state. Traditionally maize was very important crop of Punjab but over the years it has begn replaced by paddy because of its easy and assured procurement. This crop is now mainly grown in Hoshiarpur, Jaiandhar, Saheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Gurdaspur and Ropar districts only.
