RICE is an important kharif cereal crop of Punjab. The farmers of Punjab faced large number of problems, for getting higher production of paddy and among these most important is proper weed control. This crop is found infested with a wide variety of weeds which often cause losses in grain yield ranging from 30 to 50 per cent and sometimes even more. Weeds inflict maximum damage during early stages of crop growth as they are better adopted under technologically improved agriculture than in traditionalsubsistance agriculture. Introduction of high yielding crop varieties and improved technology like adoption of new crop rotations, increase in cropping intensity, higher use of fertilizers and irrigation water etc. have tilted the ecological balance infavour of weeds and their problem is becoming complex year after year. For obtaining potential yield and harvesting full benefits of costly inputs, it is necessary that weeds are properly managed.
