Austral Hepaticae 38. The gynoecium of Trichotemnoma (Steph.) Schust., together with a re-evaluation of the taxonomic position of Trichotemnomaceae Schust. and comments on family endemism in south temperate areas
Current classification of the New Zealand-Tasmanian hepatic genus Trichotemnoma Schust. (Trichotemnomaceae Schust.) in suborder Herbertineae is discussed. Details of the androecium as well as recent discovery of gynoecia of Trichotemnoma are explored, including the presence of a marsupium as the sporophyte protective device. The genus possesses a number of characters that exclude it from suborder Herbertineae, and a new suborder, Trichotemnomatineae, is created for it. The family is one of a number of monotypic families in south temperate areas, and each of the families is discussed.
