I knew of Dr Terasaki from his many books and publications. Clinical Transplants is a series that has been published annually by Drs Terasaki and Cecka since 1985, and I remember submitting a patient's story to one of his books in the early 1990s. But I had never met Dr Terasaki until our interview in his Los Angeles office. I flew from San Francisco to Los Angeles early one morning after the NATCO annual meeting to meet him. At Los Angeles airport, the cab driver was unfamiliar with the Terasaki Foundation; I am sure he was more familiar with Hollywood attractions than with those related to histocompatibility.When I finally arrived at the Terasaki Foundation Laboratory, I was guided directly to Dr Terasaki's office. He stood up, shook my hand, and sat in a chair directly across from me rather than behind his desk. He is a very quiet, humble, and unassuming man for someone who is such a legend in transplantation. His contributions to our understanding of tissue typing and humoral rejection have shaped the successes in transplantation outcomes.
