A series of ionic and nonionic surfactants was prepared from recycled products of poly(ethylene terephthalate),PET,using both diethanolamine andtriethanolamine in presence of manganese acetate as catalyst.Their surface and thermodynamic properties were investigated.Thermodynamic properties ofmicellization and of adsorption at the interface were also determined at various temperatures.The washing anddispersionpowerofthe surfactants were studied to evaluate them for use as oily beach cleaners and in petroleum sludge recovery.The study disclosed that there is an inverse relationship between their washing and the dispersion properties.It was found that surfactants with low dispersion effectiveness had good washing properties as surface cleaners.The maximum efficiency of the surfactants as oily beach cleaners was reached when the surfactant molecules were end-capped with PEG 4000 at both ends.(PEG = polyethylene glycol).The surfactants with two molecules end-capped with PEG 400 showed maximum sludge recovery.
