Field experiments were carried out during 2005-08 at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Swadzim near Poznan, Poland. None of the studied experimental factors exerted any influence on the percentage of plants damaged by frit fly (Oscinella frit) and European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). The level of maize fertilization with nitrogen determined the number of plants with symptoms of common smut (Ustilago maydis) and fusariosis (Fusarium). On the other hand, no significant effect of the fertilization level with elementary sulfur was found to be exerted on the number of plants with symptoms of these diseases. The combination of nitrogen fertilization with elementary sulfur increased the infection of maize by common smut.
