Effectiveness of different baits for slug catching in gardens and organic farms.

The effectiveness of different baits for slug catching was tested in Nowosielce (Podkarpackie area, Poland) in the season from May to October 2007. A total of 6566 slugs were caught. The greatest number of slugs (39%) was recorded near the ditch, followed by the orchard (28%), and in the area of vegetable garden (20%). The least number of slugs (13%) was recorded on the meadow area. The differences in attractiveness of kind of baits as well as the time of observation were shown. Among the used baits, the most attractive to slugs during the whole season were cabbage (25% of individuals), cats food with brans (24%) and beer (24%). Only 17% of slugs were collected in baits with Mesurol Sneckenkorn 04 GB (almost the same as in empty baits (12%)).
