Field experiments were conducted in Poland, from 1999 to 2004, to study the variability of the assemblages of weeds in maize, which were grown in a 6-field crop rotation, i.e. sugar beet, maize, spring barley, pea, winter rape and winter barley and in increasing from 32 to 37 per year monoculture. Two maize protection variants were compared, i.e. no chemical protection and use of herbicides after sowing. The number of weeds recorded in the rotation and monoculture treatments were 215 and 535/m2, respectively. Herbicides used in the crop rotation after sowing reduced weed numbers to 44 and in the after-itself variant of maize growth to 96 weeds/m2. Therefore, their efficiency amounted to 79.4 and 82.1%, respectively..
