A 2-factorial field experiment was conducted in 2003 and 2004 in Poland to determine the changes in health status of quality wheat under ploughing down stubble crops and varying rates of N fertilizer. Three types of stubble crops as a primary experimental factor were used: (1) without stubble crop; (2) with stubble crop (white mustard [Sinapis alba]); (3) stubble crop as a mixture of field pea, faba bean and oat. The secondary factor consisted of varying rates of N application: 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha. The stubble crops were beneficial to the improvement of health status of the plants. Ploughing down stubble crops decreased the indices of root and stem base infestation of spring wheat compared to lack of stubble crop. White mustard limited the infestation to a higher extent compared to the mixture of field pea, faba bean and oat. The significant effect of intensification of N application on stem base diseases was not found. The highest rate of N improved the condition of roots compared to the lower rates..
