Susceptibility of commercial spring wheat cultivars to Oryzaepholus surinamensis L.

The sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, is a pest commonly occurring in warehouses in all climatic zones. In Poland, for example, beetles of this species can survive winter even in unheated rooms. Studies were conducted to analyse the susceptibility of commercial spring wheat cultivars to feeding of the sawtoothed beetle. The 4 investigated spring wheat cultivars differed in technological quality of grain. The experiment was conducted on 3 grain fractions of different fragmentation size. The development of offspring individuals was monitored and their number and weight were recorded. In addition, loss of grain mass attributed to the sawtoothed grain beetle feeding as well as the mass of produced dust were determined. The results indicated that the development of O. surinamensis affected the quantity and quality of the analysed grains of the wheat cultivars.
