Biology, ecology, infestation symptoms and morphology of Xiphinema dentatum Sturhan, 1978 (Nematoda: Longidoridae) - a new population from Poland.

Xiphinema dentatum is a plant parasitic nematode originally described in Bavaria, Germany, from mixed forests and dry lawns. This nematode was also reported from territories of former Yugoslavia (Serbia), Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. In Poland, it was found in soil samples taken from the rhizosphere of Carpinus betulus (hornbeam) grown as a hedge in the Zoobotanical Garden of Torun. This is thought to be a new record for Polish fauna. The specimens that were found included females only. No males were recorded. However, in populations of this species, males are known to be extremely rare. No visible symptoms of infestation on hornbeam roots were observed. This population is morphologically and morphometrically similar to the one described in Bavaria and to some other populations occurring in Serbia and the Slovak Republic. Some differences in measurements compared to other populations from these countries are considered to be intraspecific variations.
