Weed control by combined mechanical and chemical methods as well as using cover crops and mulch

An alternative solution for weed control might be the use of cover crops or mulch. Cover crops can play important role in cropping systems because they can improve soil characteristics, reduce soil erosion and in some cases increase soil nitrogen availability. Field experiments were carried out in Poland in 2001-04 to evaluate the activity of different methods of weed control in cereals, maize and winter rape. Cover crop (rye) and tillage system (mulch) suppress weed population in succeeding crops. Combination of hoeing and chemical treatments gave a very good effect on weed control in sugarbeet and winter wheat. Experiments with mechanical method of weed control showed that the method based on conventional techniques of harrowing did not significantly reduce weed infestation in spring wheat compared with chemical weed control..
