A Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing hydroxyl groups (POSS-OH) was modified with acrylic acid via Steglich esterification reaction. FTIR, H-1 NMR and DSC analysis were used to characterize the modified nanoparticle (POSS-acrylate). Nanocomposites were prepared by separately introducing POSS-acrylate and POSS-OH into a UV cured urethane acrylate resin with different contents. POSS-acrylate showed greater interaction with polymeric matrix as revealed by the higher transparency of resultant coatings in comparison with POSS-OH. The polymerization rate also increases by introducing these nanoparticles into the coatings. The Mechanical properties of nanocomposites were studied by Vickers hardness and DMTA. The results revealed that by adding POSS-acrylate into the system, storage modulus and micro hardness decreased due to an increase in free volume between polymeric chains. However, nanocomposites containing POSS-acrylate shows the better abrasion resistance. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
