aerial perspective: Canada's National Imagery Project - How Canada is orthorectifying 5,000 SPOT 4/5 images quickly, accurately, and automatically

The goal of Canada's National Imagery Project (NIP) is to create cloud-free, accurately orthorectified Earth observation imagery covering all of Canada, south of the 81st parallel, for Natural Resources Canada (NRCan): the Centre for Topographic Information - Sherbrooke (CTI-S). The resulting orthorectified imagery is being incorporated regularly into the GeoBase website, a portal for free Canadian geographic data, accessible by anyone over the internet (www.geobase.ca). This initiative began in 2006 and is scheduled to conclude in 2011, with support from a partnership among PCI Geomatics, Telus Geomatics, and Iunctus Geomatics. The NIP is derived from an agreement between CTI-S and Telus to produce an imagery database with image coverage over all of Canada (approximately 11.5 million km2) at 10m panchromatic and 20m multispectral resolution. Throughout the duration of the project, nearly 5,000 level 1A SPOT 4 and SPOT 5 scenes will be orthorectified and roughly 100,000 individual image files produced.
