The occurrence of halite in the Permian A Bed Evaporite, Kirkby Thore, Cumbria

Borehole investigations carried out in the 1980s east of Kirkby Thore, Cumbria, to locate additional gypsum resources, discovered a 7 m thick halite facies within the upper part of the A Bed. This is the first record of Permian halite in onshore Cumbria. The A Bed comprises a mudstone-dominated sabkha sulphate deposit formed within a continental playa lake setting. The halite is considered to have been deposited sub-aerially within a saltpan centrally located in the A Bed playa.
