Fifty years old - this is an impressive age for a specialist journal but PM has managed it and I am, of course, pleased that it has done so. Fifty years ago, it was apparent that the time was ripe for someone to issue a journal aimed at those active in the field of practical metallography and that would provide them with specialised information and enable them to share know how. Bear in mind that in previous decades, it became necessary to train specialists familiar with the metallographie techniques that had become essentia! to research, industrial development and the quality control of materials, and the profession of metallographer - male and female - was born.
