Professor Hans-Henrik Parving (Copenhagen University Hospital) reminded delegates that up to 40% of people with diabetes (both types) will develop nephropathy and that proteinuria is a powerful risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in type 2 diabetes. He explained the central roles of angiotensin II (implicated in hypertension and the initiation and progression of heart and kidney disease), renin and prorenin, and outlined advances in their control. In particular, he discussed the role of the antihypertensive agent aliskiren, the first direct renin inhibitor.
