Improving Outcomes in Continuing Medical Education

As providers of medical education, much of our attention over the last few years has been focused on processes for measuring, as opposed to improving, educational outcomes, which is what we, as an industry, really aim to accomplish. The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality released a report in January 2007 titled "Effectiveness of Continuing Medical Education," which focused in part on ways to improve educational outcomes and confirmed tried-and-true methods for improving continuing medical education (CME). Although it is important to continue measuring outcomes to gauge the success of CME, it is equally important for providers to understand the essential elements of quality medical education that consistently deliver strong outcomes and effective learning. This report marks a perfect occasion to discuss a number of methods that improve educational outcomes in almost any CME scenario.
