Measurement of scapular kinematics has proved to be difficult because movement of the scapula occurs beneath the skin and muscles [1]. Compared to electromagnetic tracking systems which have been extensively studied [2, 3] and used in clinical practice [4-6], few studies have evaluated scapular movement using reflective markers with an optoelectronic measurement system [7-9]. However, the development and evaluation of methods which can track complete shoulder motion (i.e. thoraco-scapulo-humeral joint) using an optoelectronic system is of interest for the following reasons.
