The oil and gas industry is under increasing pressure to do more with less and any strategy that keeps machinery running at peak performance needs careful consideration. Downtime, machinery repairs and replacement all detract from bottom-line profits, so reducing maintenance costs and increasing reliability are top priority. Shell Refining Australia had an incident that highlighted the effects of severe moisture contamination. Noyan Ercan, Reliability Engineer said, "An operator conducting routine rounds noted a slightly low oil level on the journal bearing housing of a large electric motor in continuous service. The well-intended operator proceeded to use a top-up container, labelled as the appropriate product, to return the oil to the correct level.
