This paper covers various measures which have been adopted in the automation of hot stoves of mini blast furnaces (of up to 350 m{sup}3 capacity) designed & engineered by MECON to facilitate efficient furnace operation at low operating costs with minimum operator intervention. In India, Mini Blast Furnaces came into limelight in early 1990s using mainly two types of technologies -Korf with Glendon system for Hot Blast and the other developed by MECON with Hot Blast Stoves. While maximum hot blast temperature using Glendon system can be reached around 750℃ with Hot Blast Stoves it is possible to achieve a temperature of about 1050℃ with BF gas of same composition. Though initially popular due to low investment cost, but due to frequent failures of Glendon tubes coupled with high down time, today Glendon system is almost extinct.
