Solar by summer, wood by winter: Ways to combine solar collectors and wood-gasification boilers

In many parts of the United States, the summer of 2012 was a banner season for solar energy collection. The exceptionally hot and sunny weather in Upstate New York required my solar combisystem to operate in heat dump mode (nocturnal cooling) several times. It had absolutely no problem supplying 100% of our domestic hot water needs from June through September.
