This article presents preliminary results from a series of studies perfonned with the main objective of producing synthetic paper from plastics waste. Various polypropylene ( PP) wastes were characterised before and after 'compounding' with filler and additives. Some of these composites were suitable for film extrusion, and were then used for making paper. Characterisation of the composite films demonstrated the technical feasibility of the proposed objective: a writable and printable plastic composite paper obtained using pp bottles from municipal refuse. Although it had lower properties with respect to rigidity, opacity and printing mainly with aqueous ink, the pp composite films displayed many similar characteristics, compared with cellulose paper, giving grounds for continuing researchfor improving the substitute material.
