摘要

The development of magnetic media, such as video and audio tapes, brought a new accessibility and portability to recording. Essentially "push-button" records, such tapes have been filling museum and archive collections at a staggering pace in the last three decades. The necessity of transferring whole collections before they become unplayable, combined with the number of tapes in a typical collection (often hundreds of thousands), makes care of a tape collection appear overwhelming.
