Hydrogels are water containing polymer networks derived from hydrophilic monomers and often modified with hydrophobic monomers. Hydrogels have been used for a variety of applications, especially as contact lenses. While hydrogel lenses are comfortable to wear, they are not completely ideal for extended wear due to insufficient oxygen transport.
