Boehlerit is among the pioneers of hardmetal technology. The development of hardmetals on a laboratory scale was begun at Bonier Steel in Dusseldorf as early as 1929. Commercial scale production started in 1932 and the new material was sold under the Boehlerit trademark, with a large part of sales in export markets. After the war reconstruction began. Following on from the plant in Dusseldorf, a second facility was installed at the Kapfenberg plant, which is the head office of Austrian Boehler group. Further plants followed in the 1960s in Turkey and Argentina. Initially the production programme of Boehlerit was largely directed to the markets and needs of Bonier and the area of steel and foundry technology. A further speciality area was the production of hardmetal blanks for various applications, e.g. wear parts and chipless forming tools with a very successful range of products in interesting market niches.
