Supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) is a potential technique for converting heavy hydrocarbon materials (such as oil shale) to liquid hydrocarbons. Organic solvents have been typically used, but water has also come to be used for SCFE of coal (1), oil shale (3,4,5) and oil sand (2). Under favorable conditions up to 70% of the extracts are obtained from the shale. The TGA/DTGA provide some of the information on the quality of the extracts obrtained. The TGA/DTGA data that are nonlinear phenomena do not readily provide a direct and obvious means of comparing results of experiments under different conditions without doing a rigorous kinetic analysis. Thus, the simple GBPO method provides a model to extend and convert the raw nonlinear TGA/DTGA data into linear data that are easy to compare.
