One of the spatial information profession's characteristics is its exceptional diversity. This makes designing a rational educational program and a pathway for professional development problematic. However, academics are developing innovative new course structures that will go some way to solving these problems. The diversity of the industry is reflected in the organisations that represent it. The SSSI, which is positioned as the industry's umbrella organisation, itself originated from five institutes that saw a strategic advantage in joining forces. But even after this rationalisation, four other organisations also have significant roles in the industry: ANZLIC, the Spatial Industries Business Association, the Australasian Spatial Information Education and Research Association and the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information.
