The hydrocarbons in jet fuel undergo thermal degradation on exposure to high temperatures during the operation of commercial and military aircrafts.The interaction of the metal surfaces in various fuel system components with the hydrocarbons in jet fuel at high temperatures produces carbonaceous deposits on these surfaces (1-5).Temperature Programmed Oxidation (TPO) can be used to characterize the carbon deposits produced by the jet fuel thermal stressing over catalytic and non-catalytic substrates.A typical TPO experiment gives multiple CO_2 peaks that evolve over a temperature range of 200 to 900degC,attributed to the presence of carbonaceous deposits with different oxidation reactivities(6-10).
