Naphthenic acids are well-known to be corrosive species found in petroleum. It has been shown in literature that as long as the source of acidity is constant (that is, the same naphthenic acids are employed in corrosivity tests at different concentrations), naphthenic corrosion rates are predictable from the number of moles of acids present in a sample (1), and that number can be obtained by the Total Acid Number (TAN). However, since we have different distributions of acidic species in oils, it is an obvious inference that the key to predict the naphthenic corrosivity of a given oil lies on the characterization of its naphthenic acids.
