Ag in America Tour seeks to turn teens on to farm careers

NICK Nagele uses a candy-coated lesson to teach students about the complexities of farming. He and his co-worker, ag educator Amy Hammer, stock up on M&Ms when they visit high schools. "Farming is the process of raising a crop, but it's a very risky business," explains Nagele, who was raised on a family farm in rural Sheldon, 111., and now travels across the Heartland as an ag educator with the Ag in America Tour. Archer Daniels Midland Co. sponsors the tour. "Every student gets a bag of M&Ms," notes Nagele. He uses the candy in a hands-on activity to help them learn how farmers decide whether and when to sell their crops on the futures market.
