WITHIN the past five years, one major chemical and seed company told farmers its data indicated corn could reach a trend yield of 300 bushels per acre by 2030. Of course, the company's innovations and products would be extremely important in reachingthat high-water mark.It sounded like pie-in-the-sky at the time, based on graphs and charts and not real down-in-the-dirt farming. Looking at it some five years later, the claim doesn't seem quite so "Buck Rogers" after all.
