What is the future of the traditional family farm in western Canada? If the trends of the last 50 years continue into the future, the answer to this question is clear--the forces of the market will soon complete the restructuring of Prairie agriculture, ushering in the final phase of an era that began just 100 years ago. The end of the post-World War II Fordist boom and the continuation of the global integration of processes of wealth creation and acquisition have resulted in dramatic changes to theinternal and externat dynamics that drive Prairie agriculture. The end result of these changes, as they are manifest in stale policy and the changes at the level of the agricultural producer, will he a very different political economy in the west Given the environmental, social and political ramifications of these changes, we once again need to explore the role of the state in crafting potential alternatives.
