EPA Final Rule Would Revise Regulation On Certain Equipment Containing Mercury

Equipment containing mercury will be added to the Environmental Protection Agency's list of universal wastes and thus be subject to less-stringent standards than other hazardous wastes under a final rule signed July 27.Regulating spent mercury-containing equipment as a universal waste "will lead to better management of this equipment and will facilitate compliance with federal hazardous waste requirements," EPA said in a prepub-lication version of the rule signed by EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson.
