Climax Molybdenum Co. operates a molybdenum ore conversion facility at Fort Madison, Iowa, that processes molybdenum ores, typically molybdenite, into high-grade molybdic oxides and molybdenum chemicals for industrial and commercial uses. In the facility's sublimation plant, low-grade molybdic oxide is fed into two high4emper-ature furnaces that heat the material to its sublimation temperature, removing impurities and converting it to high-grade molybdic oxide.Three years ago, the company decided to improve its sublimation process to increase the furnaces' output and the product quality. To optimize the sublimation process, Climax Molybdenum needed a device that could consistently and accurately measure the amount of material fed into each furnace within a given time, regardless of the material's density or flowrate.
