Pork CRC - one of its best years

The Australian pork industry recorded one of its best years in history in terms of producer returns and, given the strong underlying demand for Australian pork, the projected increase in population growth and the potential for increasing competition at the retail level, the future looks bright for the industry especially if future growth is demand, rather than supply, driven. For the Pork CRC, the year was highlighted by the commercialisation of our pig-specific triticale (Berkshire), the new feed barley for the North (Shepherd) and the high yielding pea variety (Maki). We also commercialised NIRS calibrations for the rapid nutrient evaluation of grains through AusScan. The new grains will enable growers and producers to enter into contract arrangements, and will assist in breaking our reliance on grains bred and grown for the human food and manufacturing markets, and the price fluctuations associated with these.
