New asting disease in swine?

In 1997, I wrote an article referring to a new wasting disease facing Illinois swine veterinarians in the USA when they dealt with post-weaning wasting situations. Since that time Post-Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) has severely affected pork production in the United Kingdom, Ontario, Canada, and parts of the United States. PMWS has certainly affected swine herds in Illinois in the past nine years, but until relatively recently has not been one of the most common diseases veterinarians were called upon to treat on a regular basis.
