Intensive agriculture be sustainable

An economist, the managing director of a poultry company and an NGO executive discussed sustainability's role in agriculture. Sustainable agriculture can mean different things to different people and this can lead to lively discussions on this topic.At the Alltech 25th International Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium a roundtable discussion was held to present opinions on what sustainable agriculture means to consumers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), food companies and society at large and how this would affect agriculture. The panellists were DrLutz Goedde, deputy director Agriculture Development, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Dr Michael Boehfje, distinguished professor in the department of agricultural economics, Purdue University;and Philip Wilkinson, managing director, 2 Sisters Group, the United Kingdom's largest chicken processor.
