Micro-organisms can contaminate eggs either congenitally or extra-genially. Congenital contamination usually occurs in the ovary. Organisms of concern are salmonellas, Mycoplasma and some viruses. Control of these egg transmitted diseases is possibleby vaccination, elimination of infected birds by blood testing or antibiotic egg dipping in the case of Mycoplasma. Extra-genital contamination occurs after the egg is laid and results in rots, bangers, moulds, early dead embryos and higher first week farm mortality, often from yolk sac infection
