During 1996, almost 300 million broilers will have been grown in Taiwan yielding a total of around 500,000 metric tons eviscerated weight of chickenmeat Taiwan's chicken industry is unique in that the production of the slower-growing, coloured-feathered local breeds plays an important role and will continue to do so for some time. It is estimated that the split between the number of conventional broilers grown and native birds is currently around 50:50 however, many consider that, in the foreseeablefuture, this ratio will change to 65:35 in favour of the conventional imported stock Thus, currently it would appear that the number of conventional broilers grown amounts to around 150 million a year, while a similar number of native coloured birds arealso produced.
