From live bird handling and hanging to adding flavours and marinades, there were a number of award-winning processing ideas at VIV Europe last November. More than 50,000 visitors attended the VIV Europe 2001 trade show at the Jaarbeurs showground inUtrecht, the Netherlands in November last year. The Victam show scheduled to take place several months earlier had been postponed because of fears of Foot and Mouth Disease in Europe. So for the first time, the two shows were held simultaneously. The organisers - Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs - expected a record number of visitors. They might have been disappointed by the attendance figures, which were largely attributed to the poor state of pig farming in Europe. There was no evidence of a downturn in attendance in the poultry halls, indicating continued optimism in the future of this sector. This positive attitude was further reflected in the number of innovations on show for the first time. We present here some of the eye-catching developments on show forthe first time in Europe, which will appear in the processing plant of the future.
