Two component coatings based on cyclic carbonates

Many two component coatings involve materials with health and safety concerns eg a polyisocyanate (a sensitiser), melamine-formaldehyde resin (which may release toxic formaldehyde). There have been a number of patents and literature that have mentioned the reaction of a carbonate and an amine crosslinker to form an isocyanate, which reportedly give good gloss, acetone resistance and blocking resistance, but sometimes leave a tertiary amine group in the final coating that may cause yellowing.
