Syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of mixed-valence pentanuclear [(Mn3Mn2III)-Mn-II] and hexanuclear [(Co4Co2III)-Co-II] complexes derived from 3-formylsalicylic acid

Mixed-valence pentanuclear manganese complex, [{(MnMnIII)-Mn-II(fsatren)}(2)Mn-II(H2O)(4)]center dot n(sol) ([(Mn3Mn2III)-Mn-II], H(6)fsatren=tris-[(2-hydroxy-3-carboxybenzylidene)aminoethyl]amine, sol=H2O or MeOH), and hexanuclear cobalt complex, [(Co4Co2III)-Co-II-(fsaea)(2)(OMe)(4)(NO3)(2)(OAc)(2)(MeOH)(2)] ([(Co4Co2III)-Co-II], H(3)fsaea = 3-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)formimidoyl]-salicylaldehyde) were prepared and their magnetic properties were studied. [(Mn3Mn2III)-Mn-II] has a linear tetranuclear core, whereas [(Co4Co2III)-Co-II] has a face shared incomplete tetra cubane core. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
