Canada-based polyolefins producer Nova Chemicals is involved in a project to commercialise a stand-up pouch made entirely of polyethylene. Pouches conventionally have a multi-material film structure, such as PET outer layer and PE inner layer, often with a metallised barrier middle layer. Nova said the pouch it is helping to develop is a multi-layer HDPE product. The main advantage of using a single material is that it makes the packaging easier to recycle.
