Production in EU-27 in 2012 dips against growing global trend / Export of primary plastics climbs 2.9% / Central Europe accounts for just 14% of consumption / Recovery on but still a way to go to pre-2009 levels
Plastics production in the EU-27 zone recorded revenues of EUR 86.7 bn in 2012. As for plastics converting, it broke the EUR 200 bn barrier for the first time since 2008, taking in approximately EUR 201.8 bn in revenues and bringing it closer to the levels the industry realised prior to the crisis brought about by the global financial situation of 2009. Roughly 138,600 individuals earn their living in plastics production, with almost ten times as many-1.263m-earning a wage in plastics converting. Add in the number of employees in the plastics machinery sector, and the number of jobs in Europe reaches 1.4m for the entire plastics industry. Figures were released by the association of plastics manufacturers in Europe, Plastics-Europe (Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticseurope.org), at a K 2013 press conference in Dusseldorf.
