Demand for plastic products is growing in Brazil, rising by 2.3% in 2011 to 6.89m t. However, the country's domestic processing industry is unable to keep pace. The sector grew by only 1% last year to 6.5m t of processed plastic. As a result, a lot of the country's demand for plastics products is met by imports. "We are losing ground over our foreign competitors," said Jose Ricardo Roriz Coelho, president of Brazil's plastics industry association Associacao Brasileira da Indiis-tria do Plastico (Abiplas; www.abiplast.org.br) when presenting the group's annual industry report for 2011.
