Polymer output could reach 12m t/y in 2015 as delayed projects are revived / SMEs dominate the fragmented processing sector/ Demand mostly driven by household, consumer goods and cars / Hopes pinned on exports
As the economic crisis spread in 2009, almost no country was spared. Those in the developing world, such as India, with an up-and-coming plastics industry valued by the India Brand Equity Foundation (ibef, Haryana; www.ibef.org) at around USD 6.6 bn in 2007/2008, felt the effects especially harshly. But as the global economy rebounds, expectations are that India's plastics industry will start gathering strength again. The Indian sub-continent is regarded as the world's eighth largest consumer of plastics. Still, per capita consumption in 2009 stood at only 6 kg, compared with the global average of 27 kg. The more quickly awakening Asian giant China had per capita consumption of 17 kg.
